Storm Season Ready Gardens
Gardens are so often considered a sanctuary. When you own a garden you spend many hours caring for it or paying someone else to and you also get a great many benefits from one too. If you have children they would often play in the garden and summer afternoons may be spent relaxing and taking in the tranquil surroundings. But there are times when a garden can become hazardous if not cared for properly. Particularly in our climate when we can experience harsh weather such as wild storms. As we approach storm season it’s a good idea to make sure your garden is ready.
Water can cause disaster
With storms comes water. Sometimes it’s a little, sometimes it’s a torrential downpour. Because you can never really be sure what the day might bring, it’s best to be prepared for the worst. Gutters should be one of your first ports of call. Gutters that are clogged with leaves will surely overflow with potential to leak through windows or roof edges. When you think of your Brisbane garden design have drainage holes in garden walls and where necessary, put drains in around your home. Drainage holes will ensure water does not build up behind the walls causing collapse and drains will direct any excess water away from the house. These ‘drains could be something as simple as a garden bed to direct water or slopes in the grass for water to run along.
Check trees and gardens
Check your garden for any loose items that need to be secured. Compost bins, children’s toys and garden equipment can become dangerous and even deadly in strong winds. Trees and certain plants can also be windy weapons in a big storm. Do a check on any of these for limbs that are dying or already dead and remove them. Do not over prune trees as trees that don’t have lower limbs can become top heavy and fall easier. If you are unsure of the stability of smaller trees you can try tethering them to a stable source. Hanging plants can pose as a threat to glass windows they may be near as well as any shade cloth. To avoid tears and breakages to shade sails and the like consider removing them when a storm is predicted or check to see if they are fastened correctly.
If you make an effort to check your garden you should be in the clear for storm season. To be on the safe side you can check with a Brisbane landscape design specialist who can offer the best advice on how to prepare to the upcoming wild and windy weather.
